About 1 minuteReading time

"Tailor your resume for every application" is advice everyone gives and almost nobody does. The reason is simple — rewriting from scratch is exhausting, and most of the rewrites change nothing that matters. The 5-minute version below preserves the 20% of changes that actually move the needle.

The 5-minute routine

  1. Minute 1 — Read the job post. Highlight 5-7 terms the post repeats. These are the keywords.
  2. Minute 2 — Update the summary. Rewrite only the first two sentences of your summary to reflect the role, using 2-3 of those keywords naturally.
  3. Minute 3 — Reorder bullets. Within each role, move the bullet that best matches the job to the top. Do not delete anything.
  4. Minute 4 — Tweak two verbs. Change one or two weak verbs ("responsible for", "helped with") to the language the job post uses.
  5. Minute 5 — Re-export. Rename the PDF to the role (Jane-Doe-Resume-SeniorPM.pdf) and upload.

That is the whole thing. It is not a magic trick — it is a discipline of not rewriting, and of making the top of each section match the recruiter's keyword search.
