7 red flags to spot in a job description before you apply

Rockstars, ninjas, "we work hard and play hard" — some phrases in a job description are genuine tells about the team. Here is the decoder ring.

Not every red flag is a dealbreaker, but each one is a question you should get a real answer to before you sign.

  1. "Wear many hats" / "no task too small". Translation: no support, no specialization, no promotion path.
  2. "Must be a rockstar / ninja / 10x". Translation: we will measure you against an imaginary standard.
  3. "Fast-paced environment". Usually fine. "High-intensity, fast-paced environment with tight deadlines" is a warning.
  4. No salary range at all, in a jurisdiction that requires one. At minimum, they do not know the law. At maximum, they are testing you.
  5. The title mismatches the level. "Senior" role with 2-4 years required, or "Director" reporting to a VP who reports to a VP — the org chart is messy.
  6. The tech stack is a 30-item list. Either they do not know what they need, or one person is doing all of it.
  7. "Family" or "like a family". Families do not pay salaries. Teams do.

Any one of these is surviveable. Three together is a pattern. Run the check on the job analyzer to get a quick assessment.
